- What does Star Homes charge per square foot?
Because of variables involved in constructing a new home (size and number of windows, height of ceilings, size of garage, type of trim, stone versus brick elevations, etc. and etc.), Star Homes doesn’t quote per square foot prices. If a builder says they build for a certain square foot price, take it with a grain of salt because you don’t know what’s included in that price. Star Homes does have base plans showing what features are included that we can email to you at your request.
- How long does it take to complete a home?
Star Homes guarantees 150 days from start of construction to completion of a new home (subject to in climate weather delays and availability of special order items). If it’s a project with additional requirements (ponds, out buildings, site development, difficult job site, etc.), we may suggest a longer period of time for completion.
- Where is Star Homes located?
Our new office (as of September 2009) is located at the corner of St.Joe Center Road and Wheelock Roads (adjacent to the Cherry Hill Golf Course). Feel free to call for a visit.
- How long have you been building in Fort Wayne?
Star Homes will be celebrating its 50th year in the new home construction business. Our founder, Delbert Delagrange (co-founder of Home Lumber and Trinity Lighting) began in 1960 in Woodburn, Indiana. His son-in-law, Gregg Richhart, continues his legacy in our new office located at the corner of St.Joe Center Road and Wheelock Road.
- Does Star Homes build outside of Fort Wayne?
We’ve constructed homes as far away as Lima, Ohio but prefer to stay within a 60 mile radius of the Greater Fort Wayne area if possible. We look at each build job individually though, so feel free to call us no matter how far your project might be.
- Do you build 2" x 6" walls?
Star Homes is a custom builder that builds, 2" x 4" exterior walls 16" On Center, 2" x 6" exterior walls 24" On Center, and 2" x 6" exterior walls 16" On Center, according to what our client requests. There are other options to consider like adding ½" urethane foam sprayed on an exterior wall, along with other insulating options that may help you decide what size wall is right for you.
- Can you build in all subdivisions?
We’re charter builders in several subdivisions locally, but Star Homes will build on any country or estate lots or in any other subdivision that isn’t exclusive to one particular builder.
- How do I start the process of building with Star Homes?
The first step is to call and make an appointment (no obligation). We will sit down and discuss your ideas and wishes - to get a good idea of what you want us to quote for you. Most clients have an idea as to style and size of home but need help on specific features that custom builders offer. From that first meeting (which can be at our new office or at one of our models throughout Fort Wayne), Star Homes can come up with a building quote that will detail an overall price (allowances, items included, etc.).
- Does Star Homes have Models I can visit?
Yes, we do have a number of models for you to visit. Our current models are located in the Model/Communities area of our website. We have information such as times they are open, how to contact us, and a gallery of photos for each model you may be interested in visiting. There are also links to any homes that are for sale in the subdivision where that model is located.
- Can you help locate a lot?
As part of the service to our clients, we work with all developers in Fort Wayne and the outlying areas to locate and provide you with information concerning lot availability and pricing. Star Homes owns lots in several subdivisions in Fort Wayne, but more times than not, we build on client owned lots.
- What is the major difference between Star Homes and other builders?
Star Homes has a proven track record that spans 50 years. Our experience and integrity in the local homebuilding community is second to none. We use special selected subs and suppliers because they know what we expect when it comes to craftsmanship and quality. Most have been with us from the beginning, spanning several generations.

- What about financing?
Many banks are providing Permanent/Construction loans to our clients. You apply one time and close before construction begins. The bank will provide draws to the builder until completion, at which time the loan becomes permanent. There are many different types of loans though and it’s still a good idea to have the lending institution explain them directly to you.
